There are so many available options for parents to see a photographers work. With so many options how is someone supposed to pick one?
Do you choose who is closest to you?
Do you find someone who your best friend used?
Do you scour your local mom groups looking for recommendations?
Have you googled and googled but feel lost on how to choose?
It can be overwhelming!!!! What makes a person the photographer for YOU?
Here is my take on choosing a newborn photographer, because you are right, with so many choices how can someone decide?
Photography is a personal experience, the goal is to capture your most incredible and memorable moments.
So choosing the right photographer is essential to ensure these moments are documented for you and your family to treasure.
First and foremost I would urge parents to choose a photographer that sparks emotion while looking at their work.
You should FEEL something when you are looking through their body of work, that feeling is something you want to experience everytime you look through your images so you can relive this amazing time in you and your families lives.
Newborn photography captures such a fleeting moment in a families life, they only stay that little for a little while.
Before you know it the window is gone and that sweet little newborn is now a baby, soon to be a toddler.
When they say it goes by so fast, they aren’t joking. It truly does!
The second suggestion I would urge parents to find a photographer with training.
But what is training and how do I know?
Don’t be afraid to ask any prospective photographer what credentials they have for handling your newborn baby.
There are many professional courses, mentoring and workshops a photographer can take to advance their skills and most importantly learn about newborn safety.
Crystal Lee Photography has been photographing newborns in the Red Deer and Central Alberta area since 2010.
I have had the privelege of photographing hundreds of newborn babies during my photography journey.
I have taken several newborn posing workshops where I was able to learn proper posing techniques and most importantly newborn safety.
I have also had the privelege to teach newborn posing to aspiring newborn photographers across Canada to educate them in safe newborn posing practices.
I continue my education by involving myself in numerous online workshops, courses and online groups to share information and to evolve my art.
The third thing I suggest to parents is to look through a prospective photographers portfolio, do you see a wide variety of poses and angles?
Photographers generally have a specific style that they are drawn to and their work is a reflection of that individual sense of style.
Whether it be in the props they use or their use of editing techniques. Photography is a very personal art form.
Choosing a photographer should be in tune with your personal sense of style.
Are you a person who loves bright colorful images?
Do you love a lot of props?
Are you more drawn to a simplistic style?
Choosing a photographer whos vision is inline with yours is key to you loving your images for generations to come.
My style has evolved as my career has. I am drawn to rich textiles and gorgeous textures.
I believe newborns are perfect the way they are and don’t believe in the use of busy props.
Personally I feel this distracts from the essence of who they are. My goal is to capture your baby in all their perfection. Encased by beautiful soft lighting and nestled in the most beautiful natural textiles that I source for my photography.
I love to create images in my signature moody, rustic, classic style. I want your images to stand the test of time, and not be outdated with the use of in the moment trends.
My goal is for you to love your images as much in 20 years as you do at this very moment.
My last suggestion is never to be afraid to ask questions prior, ask for their education, and credentials.
Don’t be shy to ask to see a sample of finished galleries so you can know what to expect.
And if at any time you feel uncomfortable with your newborn photographers posing practices. You have ever right to ask them to stop!
Newborns are fragile, and it takes a skilled and well educated photographer who understands this to achieve many of the popular poses you have gushed over on the internet.
Remember that you are the client and this is your baby.
A Newborn Photography experience is one that should be stress free and most importantly fun! It is my goal that all my parents and clients have a relaxed enjoyable experience. I want you to sit back and relax take some much needed quiet time and allow me to create these moments for you 🙂
I hope this helps you to have some ideas on how to choose the newborn photographer that is right for you!
